about

"In September of 1960, J Robert Oppenheimer, father of the
atomic bomb, set out upon a lecture tour of Japan.
Oppenheimer, who had su􀆦ered great guilt in the years
since witnessing the consequences of his scientific pursuits,
was of course stalked by a single question:
Would he visit Hiroshima?
In a letter presented to him during a September 17th
appearance at Asahi Kaikan Hall in Osaka, a 21 year old
student’s father begged:
Come to Hiroshima.
“We can understand the delicacy of the situation, but do
hope that your decision will not be dictated by any feeling that you might meet
with personal unfriendliness.”
“Hiroshima’s citizens bear no animosity toward any individual for the tragedy
which overtook them… our only hope is that there will never be another
Hiroshima.”
Oppenheimer was unfortunately unable to make that trip, as ongoing civil
unrest in the country of Japan had made his handlers nervous, and it was with
great regret that Oppenheimer drew his last breath seven years later, never
having visited the city of Hiroshima.
****
Oppenheimer in Japan takes an imaginative look back on that trip, proposing
the scenario that a grief stricken man was able to face the ghosts that had
haunted him for the last 15 years. That the father of the atomic bomb had the
opportunity to gaze upon the city that his work had devastated, and see the
potential for hope, for redemption, and for peace."
